Some factors can ruin any resume. Sometimes people with very good work experience do not receive any interview invitations for this very reason. The most common of them are given below:
1. Short period of work and frequent change of companies. Even if you worked in companies with a world-known name but not for long, this is the first red flag for any hiring manager. Hospitality companies, especially here in the Middle East, invest a lot in their staff. Besides high Visa costs, insurance, and administrative costs (~2,500 USD) you will receive training about hygiene, their food and drinks menu as well as service standards. Recruiters who see that you change your job every 2-3 months for more than one time, will not consider your application, your commitment of a minimum of one year is important. This guide will help you avoid common resume and CV mistakes to succeed in the competitive hospitality industry.
If you worked part-time for a certain period (Season or Festival) mention this in the CV as a (3 Month Seasonal).
2. Your CV Photo - We are all human and your picture is the first thing a manager is looking at, to impress them. For the hospitality industry your look, impression, and character are most important. Take a smart casual picture in color, high resolution with a smile, it’s a must! Nobody wants to see a serious stone face waiter in a suit standing straight like a tree... make a good first impression, put some effort into it - take a friend and take some good pictures in front of a white wall
Don’ts (and we have seen it all): No drinks, no party picture with your friends, no closed eyes, no holiday picture in front of Burj Khalifa or on the beach, no sadness, no passport picture, and last but not least no fake pictures.
Remember – a smile says more than 1000 words
3. Messy work experience - Always remember: The latest job has to be the first in the experience field. Believe it or not, the recruiter does not have time to search through five pages of experience starting from 2004. Most important is your recent work, 3 – 4 last jobs and do not add 15 tasks per job you did, Human resources managers know what the duties of a bartender or waiter ;) If you want to add something, add 3 key achievements per experience.
4. Apply according to your experience! Do not submit the same resume (or even worse, different resumes) to the same company, applying for two different positions at the same time. This means that you do not know what you want, and you are desperate for any job. At 99%, your resume will be rejected for both positions. The same rule applies for applying on different levels (exp. Manager and Line staff). If you do not have leadership experience, you are not qualified to work as a manager. If you want to become a manager, grow within your company. Candidates rarely get hired by a company because of their level of experience.
If you are not sure about your qualifications, share your CV with us and we will help you to achieve your career targets.
5. What to submit – Generally said, submit your CV and a motivated short introduction about yourself, 5 – 10 sentences. If the recruiter can’t find your CV out of 28 submitted documents, you will not get hired anyway. More is less,
Don’ts: Do not send all your kindergarten university certificates, your family photos, two canceled Visa papers, Passport copies, and others.
HRs who read your well-structured CV, and all the important information there will get in contact with you if they want to see your certificates.
6. Your Email Address – Make yourself a decent Email address with your real name in it. Once you are applying for any job in a serious company, please do not send your CV from KingoftheJungle@gmail.com or sugarbabe15@yandex.ru.It looks highly unprofessional and HR will not proceed with your application. 360 Agency Middle East is your trusted partner in navigating the Middle Eastern hospitality job market.
